US History - WWII: Search Tips

Use the tabs below to find reliable, recommended resources for your research project.

Consider Keywords

Try out alternate keywords for your topic to see what gets you the best results. For example:

  • different spellings -
    "World War II"
    "World War Two"
    "second World War"
  • broader or narrower terms for your topic -
    "Asian Americans"

    "Japanese Americans"
  • synonyms -
    "women"

    "females"

Use Quotation Marks for Phrases

When you put quotation marks around a phrase in a search, it is telling the search engine or database that you only want results with those words together.

"African Americans" = results about African Americans

Just typing in African Americans (with no quotes) will get you:

results containing the term "African"

+

results containing the term "Americans"

Use a Wildcard for Variations

Wildcards take the place of one or more characters in a search term. They're handy when there are a lot of variations on a word, but all of them would match your search. For example:

Latin*

will bring up results for

Latinx

Latino

Latina
