MHS Book Walks

Picture books by Kao Kalia Yang are posted in the hallway between the library and the cafeteria commons. Each book takes a small scene from The Latehomecomer and teases it out into a full story.

Activities include:

  • Read From the Tops of the Trees (summary)
  • Read Yang Warriors (summary)
  • Read The Most Beautiful Thing (summary)
  • About the author
  • Timeline of The Latehomecomer's events
  • Southeast Asia map with book locations marked
  • Interactive board: "What does "home" mean to you?"
  • Contributions of display items by students encouraged!

Research Activities

Use the mindmap in Credo search, assign students different sub topics about the Hmong culture and people they can then do a scavenger hunt on the topic to find some combination of the following: 

  • Refugee Camps 
  • Immigration 
  • Chemical Warfare 
  • Genocide 
  • Government Housing 
  • 1st generation immigrants 
  • 2nd generation immigrants 
  • English Language Learning 
  • Paranormal Activity 
  • Hmong New Year

Look at the evolution of Hmong culture: Have students create timelines with images and notes changes in the following:  

  • Hmong Food/Recipes
