NoodleTools, Citations & References: Definitions

Definitions

A source is where your information came from. Examples are: a news website, TikTok, your friend, an image from a website, a database article.

A citation is a reference to that source of information. Sharing that source of information is called citing the source.

In order to help people understand the source information, there are specific way to format them. That is called a citation style.

Citations vs. References

Citations and references are both methods of acknowledging sources.

In general, a citation is something you insert into your writing or project. A reference is a list of sources you include at the end of a paper or project.

More About Citation Styles

Citation style is a set of rules that dictate how to format and arrange citations in academic writing.

At Memorial High School, we use the MLA style for citations. Other schools may require for different styles, like Chicago or APA.
