SMS Dell Laptop Guide: Home

This is a guide for students/staff on how to update Dell Laptops.

TO DO

You will need to do the following EVERYDAY:

  • Shut Down and Plug In Device (Night)
  • Sync

 

You will need to do the Following ONCE A WEEK:

  • Windows Update (Check for Updates)
  • Dell Command Update

Forgot Your Charger?

The library has a limited supply of chargers that students can check out for a day. 

Lost Your Charger?

We have started checking out chargers to students. If you've lost your charger, replacements are available in the library. The fee is $35, which is billed home.

Forgot Your Device?

The Library has a limited supply of devices that students can check out for a day. We do encourage that student come to the library to call home first before a spare is checked out. 

Device/Charger Broken?

If your device/charger is broken, please bring it to the library. IT will work with you to repair or replace it. Depending on the circumstances, charges may be incurred.

  • Fees are charged for lost and damaged technology. This is so we can replace the item for other students to use.

  • An email with the fee amount will be sent out to your Parents/Guardians on Friday.  

    • A fee has been levied in the amount indicated. If you have any questions regarding this fee or if paying this fee will cause hardship, please contact your building principal.” 

  • Cash or check payments (made out to "ECASD") for these items can be made at South's library or the ECASD Board Office at 500 Main Street.

  • If you'd like to pay with a card, please log into your My School Bucks account and pay there. That account will sync with your library account.

Step One: Sync

Company Portal (Sync) 

1. Open the search bar from the bottom right or the Windows menu

2. Type “Company Portal”

3. Select Sync this device: This will open the Company Portal app and start your device sync.

Step Two: Windows Update (Check For Updates)

1. Plug in your power/charger cord.

2. From the taskbar, select Windows icon or place your curser in the Search Bar.  

3. Begin typing “Check for Updates”.

4. Select Check for Updates when it populates 

5. Select the Check for Updates button.

• Updates may download and install.

• If prompted, complete a Windows Restart.

• Depending on how many updates are available, the restart may take anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes to complete the install of some updates.

• After restart, we recommend that you repeat this process until you see the message “You’re up to date.”

 

Step Three: Dell Command Updates

Dell Command Updates:

1. Plug in your power/charger cord.

2. From the taskbar, select Windows icon or place your curser in the Search Bar.

3. Begin typing “De” until Dell Command Update appears in the results. If you type more than “De” it may not work.

4. Select and open Dell Command Update when it populates.

5. Select CHECK to begin checking for updates.

                                                                                                        

6. Select Install

• Check the box to Automatically restart system

• The update process may take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes and may require a Windows restart. Make sure any progress is saved and apps are closed.

Final Thoughts
